Fantastical

One question that always boggles my mind: " What is the line between creative and insane?" I'm currently reading " The Night Circus" by Erin Morgenstern. It's set in 19th century (Victorian) England. A realistic setting. However, the entire story revolves around the idea of the existence of real magic ( not illusions). Now we all are taught that magic "doesn't exist" ; if we cant recognize it for what it is, then it can't be real, right? I personally think this is false, but that's a discussion for another day

.But my point is: Just because this is set in a realistic setting, it automatically becomes acceptable, and in no way is Morgenstern's mental stability put into question. However, If morgenstern had placed this story in some fairy'tale fictitious place. I'm pretty damn sure that some crackpot right-wing parnet group would be up in arms. If you don't believe me, think about all the fuck parents raised over the Harry Potter series being put in public school libraries. So I cant help but wonder, what is the actual line that makes something "creative" vs. heresy? But anyway, I just felt the need to put my thoughts in binary, and share them with you. Until next time.

GIFT OF GAB: SARA BAREILLES EDITION

Well folks I'm back again, and after the third straight day of drizzle here in the city; I'm feeling sort of zen right now. Granted, i know I'm probably using that word in the completely wrong context right now. But my caffeine hasn't kicked in yet. So if you dont like it...SUCK IT!!!  But I digress... I intend this blog to be an ADHD mash-up of  all things that are my brain. Today, my brain is is in the mood to talk about music. So You get to hear a little bit(ungodly amount) about one of my favorite artists, the lovely Sara Bareilles.

Now, a few of you may familiar with her for this song:

"Love Song" is indeed a wonderful track. In fact, my mother deemed it necessary to adopt it as what I like like to call her "Vagina Anthem" for the better part of my senior year of high school. This is what I consider to be one of the few songs with a super catchy chorus that doesn't make me contemplate bashing my skull in with a meteor hammer.

What people should know is that Sara was cranking out the awesome long before this song came into the picture. Her Album "Careful confessions" Was definetly a more blues-y album. Which is a trait that still is predominant in her works after. It consisted of songs like this; my personal favorite from the album, "Undertow"

I hope you all were paying attention to how wonderful she is live (I'm also saying this because I saw her here in Atlanta on the Kalidoscope Heart tour *fanboy squee*) She's also funny as hell! Every now and again, she'll do a cover of a popular song:

For those of you who dont know this song, shame on you! This is "Dock of the Bay(Sittin on the)" By the great Sam Cook(e?)

And for you musically challenged, here's a more recent song "Genie in a Bottle" By Christina Aguilera

I'm beginning to notice how many damn videos I'm referencing for this post...This either means that I'm very serious about delivering the most accurate information possible, or I just listen to too much damn Sara Bareilles. For the sake of appearing to actually have a life, let's go with the first option, shall we?

As I said before, this woman is funny as hell. So much so, that she decided to write a song about the train wreck know as "Jersey Shore" over the tune of "Umbrella by Rihanna, and finish it off with a bit of "Hotel California"!. ON A UKELELE!!!(Where dey do dat at???) The only thing I have to say about this is...WOOT!!!(look it up people, it's now in the dictionary.
But yeah, here's that little gem of creativity:

After beating the point into your skull, I think you get the point. This woman is incredible. She's a shining becaon in the sea of bullshit that is modern-day music. One of the true artists left in the industry. THIS is what young musicians should inspire to be. I pray that this is a sign of positive shift in music, cause we so desperately need it. OH! I forgot, If you ever get a chance, look up her guitarist, Javier Dunn. The dude is a badass on the guitar. And on that note, I think I'll end my little rant here I shall leave you with the hearfelt song "Gravity". Until next time, take care everyone.

The Fate of the gay man in America

*Sigh* Where to begin?

I'm Sitting in this bookstore (during black gay prdie), and I Can;t help but to feel a little ashamed of our community. At least... on the male side of the spectrum. I look around, and see nothing but a sea of half-naked figures, glorifying the flesh. Which is all fine and dandy (I love a good set of abs as much as the next guy.) But I feel as though there is a line that has not only been crossed, but blown the fuck up on the way over. At what point did our community stop being about pride, and ALL about over-indulgence? Aren't we supposed to b e fighing against the stereotype that we are all lustful, creatures who lack morals and do nothing but search night and day for instant gratification? At what point did that become the goal? I don't think Harvey Milk died so that we could reduce all of his work to that of a fast paced techno beat and a quick fuck? Until someone who hates us send something... Then and only then do we actually stand up and fight. THAT'S  when we ddecide that its time to put our best foot forward. Times like this is when I undersdtand the term "gay is the new black". Because while sexuality goes beyond the colour of our skin, both communitites conduct themselves in a similar manner. We put our best foot forward to the outside world when we feel attacked or want to boast. But otherwise, we just wallow in our own indulgence and glorify sterotypes behind closed doors that we admonish in public. Am I the only one who feels as thought we are doing more damage to ourselves than anyone else who is against us???

Just a little food for thouhgt folks. As always, feel free to repost this wherever you please. Discussion breeds progress. Take care everyone.
