The Fate of the gay man in America
*Sigh* Where to begin?
I'm Sitting in this bookstore (during black gay prdie), and I Can;t help but to feel a little ashamed of our community. At least... on the male side of the spectrum. I look around, and see nothing but a sea of half-naked figures, glorifying the flesh. Which is all fine and dandy (I love a good set of abs as much as the next guy.) But I feel as though there is a line that has not only been crossed, but blown the fuck up on the way over. At what point did our community stop being about pride, and ALL about over-indulgence? Aren't we supposed to b e fighing against the stereotype that we are all lustful, creatures who lack morals and do nothing but search night and day for instant gratification? At what point did that become the goal? I don't think Harvey Milk died so that we could reduce all of his work to that of a fast paced techno beat and a quick fuck? Until someone who hates us send something... Then and only then do we actually stand up and fight. THAT'S when we ddecide that its time to put our best foot forward. Times like this is when I undersdtand the term "gay is the new black". Because while sexuality goes beyond the colour of our skin, both communitites conduct themselves in a similar manner. We put our best foot forward to the outside world when we feel attacked or want to boast. But otherwise, we just wallow in our own indulgence and glorify sterotypes behind closed doors that we admonish in public. Am I the only one who feels as thought we are doing more damage to ourselves than anyone else who is against us???
Just a little food for thouhgt folks. As always, feel free to repost this wherever you please. Discussion breeds progress. Take care everyone.
